On the new variant of Covid-19 JN.1, former AIIMS director and senior pulmonologist Dr. Randeep Guleria said, ‘We need a vaccine that covers a wide variety of viruses. We have many mutations. JN.1 is a sublineage of Omicron, so a vaccine made against Omicron will be effective against this variant as well.’

Dr Randeep Guleria said, ‘We first need more data to show what the current immunity is in the population and what protection we have got based on previous vaccinations. We can only decide on that basis whether we need a new vaccine, which covers the current circulating strain. This is something that will have to be done regularly, because the variants will keep changing.
